SESSIONS IN THE STUDIO
The First Stitch: A Beginner Sewing Session
What to Expect
This Beginner Sewing Course is designed especially for those who are completely new to sewing—or returning after a long break and wanting to start with confidence.
We begin at the very beginning. You’ll learn how to thread your sewing machine, avoid common tangles, and gain control so your stitching goes exactly where you intend. Each skill is introduced slowly and clearly, with demonstrations repeated as often as needed in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Throughout the day, you’ll sew a small, practical bag that brings together all the foundational techniques you’re learning. This project is thoughtfully chosen to build confidence while introducing essential skills you’ll use again and again. You’ll also receive detailed, step-by-step handouts to take home, so you can continue practicing with clarity and confidence.
All materials are provided, and every stage of the session is supported with written guidance. Along the way, you’ll pick up helpful tips and gentle shortcuts that make sewing feel approachable, enjoyable, and achievable.
We encourage you to bring your own sewing machine so you can learn how your machine works and feel confident using it at home. If you don’t have a machine, we have a small number available to borrow—just let us know when booking and we’ll reserve one for you.
You Will Learn
The Very Beginning
An introduction to sewing fundamentals: understanding your machine, threading, stitch selection, avoiding tangles, and learning how and why pressing is essential. We’ll also cover needle types and how to choose the right one for your fabric.
Sewing Curves
How to sew smooth, professional-looking curves—both internal and external. You’ll learn clipping and notching, why they matter, and how to turn and press curves for a polished finish.
Fabric Purchasing Tips
Get to know different fabrics by touch and appearance, when to use them, and how they behave when sewn. This section helps take the guesswork out of buying fabric with confidence.
Seam Finishes
Learn how to make the inside of your projects just as beautiful as the outside. You’ll practice French seams and zigzag finishes for clean, durable results.
Bias Finishes
Understand what bias is, why it’s used, and how to apply it for a professional finish on necklines and armholes.

The First Blue: An Introduction to Indigo Dyeing
What to Expect
The First Blue is a gentle, beginner-friendly introduction to the art and science of indigo dyeing. This class is designed for those who are curious about indigo and want to learn the process in a relaxed, supportive studio environment.
We begin with an overview of indigo itself—how it works, why it behaves differently from other dyes, and what makes it so enduring. You’ll learn safe handling practices, how to work confidently around an indigo vat, and how to prepare cloth for dyeing. Each step is demonstrated clearly and repeated as often as needed.
Throughout the session, you’ll explore simple resist and immersion techniques and watch the unmistakable transformation as fabric shifts from green to blue in the open air. The focus is on building understanding and confidence, so you can achieve consistent, beautiful results rather than rushing toward complexity.
You’ll leave with a collection of your own dyed samples, along with written guidance to support continued exploration at home.
All materials are provided.

The Chosen Palette: An Intermediate Natural Dyeing Session
What to Expect
The Chosen Palette is an intermediate natural dyeing class for those ready to move beyond single-dye exploration and into intentional color development. This session centers on working with a curated color palette chosen by you, using multiple natural dyes to explore harmony, variation, and depth.
Rather than focusing on one dye, this class invites you to think like a color maker. You’ll learn how different natural dyes relate to one another, how fiber preparation and mordants influence color, and how to build a cohesive palette across several dye baths. The emphasis is on understanding process and decision-making so your results feel purposeful rather than accidental.
Instruction is thoughtful and unhurried, with demonstrations repeated as needed and time built in for experimentation. You’ll work with a selection of natural dyes aligned to your chosen palette and create a coordinated set of dyed samples that reflect both technique and personal color sensibility.
All materials are provided, and you’ll leave with samples, written guidance, and a deeper confidence in working with natural color.
Is This Class Right for Me?
The Chosen Palette is perfect for you if:
You have prior experience with natural dyeing (including indigo or plant dyes)
You’re comfortable with basic dye processes and studio safety
You want to move from “trying dyes” to creating intentional color stories
You’re interested in how dyes interact across a palette
You enjoy experimentation guided by structure and purpose
This class is best suited for those who have already taken an introductory dye class or have equivalent hands-on experience.
If you’re brand new to natural dyeing, we recommend starting with The First Blue or an introductory natural dye session before joining this class.
What You Will Learn
How to design a natural dye palette based on mood, inspiration, or color family
Selecting dyes that work together harmoniously
Preparing fibers and understanding how mordants affect color outcomes
Managing multiple dye baths efficiently and intentionally
Adjusting depth of shade for light, medium, and darker tones within a palette
Reading and responding to color as it develops
Creating consistent results while allowing for natural variation
What to Bring
All dyes, fibers, and materials are provided.
Please wear clothing suitable for studio dye work.
