The First Stitch is a relaxed beginner sewing class designed to build confidence from the very beginning. Learn the basics of the sewing machine (yours or ours), simple techniques, and essential skills in a supportive, unhurried studio setting.
Four hours. Your project. Your choice. Want to make a tote bag? Learn to install a zipper? Sew a simple wallet? Make scrunchies for everyone you know? Bring a project you have been wanting to try, or choose from one of our beginner-friendly studio projects. This relaxed four-hour workshop lets you decide what you want to learn while receiving hands-on guidance along the way.
Take your sewing skills beyond simple seams while creating a sturdy, useful tote bag. Over two sessions, learn accurate construction, lining, straps, boxed corners, topstitching, and finishing techniques you will use in bags, garments, and future sewing projects. A tote bag may look simple, but it is one of the best projects for learning how to make your sewing more accurate and polished. In Beyond the First Stitch: Sew a Tote, we will build a fully finished tote while focusing on the little construction details that turn a homemade project into something you are proud to carry. You will work through the project step by step, learning how to measure and cut accurately, create strong straps, construct a lining, form three-dimensional corners, and finish the top edge cleanly. Along the way, we will talk about fabric choices, interfacing, seam strength, pressing, and how to change dimensions once you understand the basic construction. The Pattern is provided at no cost, and kits are available, including fabric, faux leather and cork! This is an 8-hour course that can be taken in one day or over two - you decide.

The First Blue invites you into the world of indigo dyeing. In this relaxed introductory class, you'll learn safe handling practices, foundational indigo techniques, and how to achieve consistent, beautiful results.
This Beginner Sewing Course is designed especially for those who are completely new to sewing — or returning after a long break and wanting to start with confidence.
We begin at the very beginning. You'll learn how to thread your sewing machine, avoid common tangles, and gain control so your stitching goes exactly where you intend. Each skill is introduced slowly and clearly, with demonstrations repeated as often as needed in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Ready to sew your first bag?
This workshop is designed for an advanced beginner.
It is a perfect next step if you have completed The First Stitch or already have basic sewing machine experience.
This workshop is designed for an advanced beginner who is comfortable using a sewing machine independently and is ready to build more confidence with bag construction.
It is a great next step if you have completed The First Stitch or already know how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, sew straight seams, and follow basic sewing instructions.
You do not need previous bag-making experience.
This class is especially well suited for students who want to learn how several layers, pockets, straps, and structure come together to create a useful finished bag.
If you are still learning how to operate your sewing machine confidently, I recommend starting with The First Stitch first.
Please bring your sewing machine and its regular accessories if you have one.
Studio sewing machines may be reserved for $10 per session.
You will also need basic sewing tools such as fabric scissors, pins or clips, a seam ripper, and marking tools.
A complete Everyday Bag kit will be available for purchase at the studio for students who would prefer to have the fabric, interfacing, hardware, and other required materials gathered together for them.
If you would rather bring your own materials, a detailed supply list will be provided after registration.

6 Week Beginner Apparel Sewing Course
A thoughtful start to making your own clothes.
If you’ve been wanting to learn to sew your own garments—but didn’t know where to start—this course was created for you.
Over six weeks, build skills that make sewing feel natural instead of overwhelming. You’ll learn how your machine works, how fabric behaves, and how patterns come together—so that by the end, you’re not just following instructions… you understand what you’re making.
This is a supportive, small-group experience designed especially for beginners looking to build a strong garment construction foundation.
What we’ll learn together:
• How to set up, use, and troubleshoot your sewing machine
• Reading patterns and cutting with confidence
• Understanding fabric (with your own swatch binder and guided notes)
• Seam finishes, zippers, hems, and elastic casings
• Garment construction through simple, wearable pieces. Choose from a ruffled hem short and top coordinated set, or a similar set in a more modest tone - ruffled hem skirt and top.

The First Blue is a gentle, beginner-friendly introduction to the art and science of indigo dyeing. This class is designed for those who are curious about indigo and want to learn the process in a relaxed, supportive studio environment.
